Fireworks in Janesville
There is an ongoing debate in Janesville over the 4th of July celebration. The specific topic is the fireworks displays, and, more specifically, the funding of said displays. The discussion continues to rage in the Gazette. One person wrote recently that Christians need to associate more with those who drink and go to strip joints. The same writer quotes a passage of the Bible which talks about loving each other, but he understands the passage to mean everybody where in reality that particular passage is talking specifically to Christians. There are plenty of verses in the Bible that says we are to love those outside of the faith. I have gone to bars, I have friends who are not Christians. I associate with those outside the faith and try to help my neighbor (meaning everybody) especially if they have a need. The problem with the Jaycee funding is the condoning of a practice which is not only against God's wishes, but has helped fracture people's lives. I'm speaking more so about the strip joints, but in a real way alcohol abuse/addiction is also detrimental to the family structures. I am also concerned about my children. I choose not to subject them to such an environment as much as possible. I went to high school with the main contributor for the Jaycee firewrks display. If I remember correctly he seemed to ridicule my beliefs in Christ. But I am more than willing to sit down and talk to him about a right relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Why? Because I am concerned about his eternal destiny, and everyone else's for that matter. The fireworks at Freedom Fest were funded by churches, specifically New Life Assembly of God. It was the best display I have ever seen. And it was done in a family friendly atmosphere. Last time I looked this was a free country and people are entitled to voice their opinion, like here, and free to choose where to go see fireworks. Let me know what you think.

I agree with you Ray. I think he is just scared that he will not get all the attention he thinks he deserves by giving money to the fourth of july celebration. It is a free world and we can choose where and how we celebrate. I really think this city is big enough for two celebrations.
